1. Check the series and scenes, not individual frames

Remember the golden rule of commercial photography: even a beginner can get one lucky shot by chance.

A photographer posts the best shot from a shoot that took him three hours of struggle to his portfolio. You think your entire photo session will turn out like that. In reality, you’ll end up with 5 good photos and 40 technically flawed shots.

Never judge a photographer by their Instagram feed. Visit their personal website (for example, on the wfolio platform) and look at complete series. If all the shots within a single shoot (lookbook, reportage, Love Story) maintain a consistent style, focus, color, and lighting—you’re looking at a professional capable of delivering consistent results.

2. Analyze the shooting conditions: Is the photographer able to work with light outside of the “golden hour”?

Many local photographers in Tbilisi are masters of the so-called “golden hour.” They know how to capture beautiful, soft images at sunset in the Old Town or on the hills overlooking the Alazani Valley. But the real world of commercial photography is much broader and more complex.

If a photographer has spent their entire career shooting romantic “Love Story” shoots in the soft light of the setting sun, they might be completely at a loss if you need a completely different visual style. Commercial photography is like a chameleon—the conditions can be anything:

Harsh daylight: when the sun is at its zenith, and your concept calls for high-contrast, sharp, glossy shots taken “head-on” using a powerful direct flash.

The city at night: shooting in the dim light of Tbilisi’s neon signs or under the glow of car headlights, where you need to know how to balance the city’s natural light with artificial light.

Interiors and spaces: authentic restaurants, lobbies of modernist hotels, or apartments in Sololaki, where light falls unevenly and strong shadows cast from the windows.

Studio space: clean, minimalist e-commerce shots, where lighting is created from scratch using several professional light sources, softboxes, and barn doors.

How to check: Don’t focus on the brand of the camera the photographer is holding; instead, look at where and how the shots in their portfolio were taken. Look for similarities with your project. If you need a lookbook shot on a cyclorama in a studio, but the photographer’s website only features street shots, hiring them for a studio project would be a huge risk. A professional who works with brands regularly showcases a wide variety of work in their portfolio: from complex studio flash photography to nighttime lifestyle shoots and on-location shoots in the mountains, where the light changes every minute.

3. In-process control: “blind” testing no longer works

The classic scenario for a disastrous photo shoot: the photographer runs around you, snaps away, shouts “Oh, great, perfect!”, and in the end, you get photos where you’re at a bad angle, your clothes are wrinkled, or your makeup has smudged.

The photographer sees the image through the camera’s tiny viewfinder, while you don’t see anything until the final images are delivered.

The modern standard for commercial photography — whether it’s a business portrait or a brand lookbook — is tethering (shooting directly to a laptop). This is exactly how my shooting process works: every shot is instantly displayed on a large monitor right on set. You, the stylist, or the marketer can immediately see the results, check how the clothes fit, adjust poses and lighting, and leave the shoot fully confident in the outcome.

4. Assess the communication format and understand the rules of the game

For many clients, the most challenging part is the preparation: “What should I wear?”, “Which location should I choose?”, “How should I pose?”. At this stage, it’s very important to find a photographer who is willing to support and guide you. But you need to understand how a sought-after professional’s workflow works.

Sometimes a client expects the photographer to provide a detailed, minute-by-minute schedule, select five secret spots in Tbilisi, and put together a personalized wardrobe lookbook—all before receiving a single penny in payment. When this doesn’t happen immediately, the client concludes that the photographer isn’t “committed.”

A sought-after photographer has dozens of messages in their inbox from people, many of whom are just testing the waters and then disappear. Spending hours of your precious time working out other people’s concepts for free is a surefire path to burnout. A deposit is a sign of your commitment. As soon as you book a date, the rules of the game change: you go from “just asking” to “top priority, ” and the photographer commits 100% to your project.

Before making a deposit, assess the photographer’s basic courtesy, the clarity of their pricing, and their willingness to answer key questions. If the photographer communicates openly and is ready to work, then immediately after you make the reservation, they’ll take you by the hand:

  • He sends you a detailed, well-thought-out visual mood board;
  • He compiles a list of specific locations tailored to your project;
  • He helps you select outfits and approves the final looks so that you feel confident and relaxed during the shoot.

Your Protection Against Compromises

When you choose a photographer, you’re not just buying someone’s time with a camera. You’re buying predictability, service, the security of your data, and a predictable commercial outcome.

I’ve built my production studio in Tbilisi on the principles of absolute transparency: transparent package pricing on the wfolio website, a formal contract, live monitoring of the shoot on a laptop, and a team of trusted local professionals (stylists, makeup artists) who work toward a common goal.

If you’re not ready to play the “expectation vs. reality” lottery and want guaranteed high-quality visuals delivered on time—check out my work in the [Portfolio] section, and let’s create a high-quality product for you or your business.
