Creative shoots, lookbooks, and campaigns: what’s the difference?

The biggest mistake new brands make is confusing artistic experiments with visuals that drive sales. For a website and social media to be profitable, content must be clearly divided by purpose:

— Campaign: This is a brand-building photo shoot that sells not the product itself, but the brand’s DNA, atmosphere, lifestyle, and emotion. Here, the story, location, and cinematic quality are key. Images from the campaign go on the website’s homepage, in banners, and in media.

— Lookbook: This is a structured demonstration of how the clothing fits on a person and how items from the collection pair with one another. The lighting setup here is more consistent, and the model’s poses are clear and easy to interpret.

— Catalog Photography: Purely commercial for product listings. A background that’s as neutral as possible (often a white or gray cyclorama), with a focus on details, seams, hardware, and a precise fit.

The Physics of Commercial Photography: How to Capture the Texture of Fabric

When someone visits a brand’s website, they want to “touch” the item through the screen. Professional fashion photography achieves this through the use of studio lighting and composition.

Many photographers in the local market use soft, diffused light, which completely destroys texture. In my work, I meticulously set up hard, directional strobe lighting. This allows me to address key commercial objectives:

— Textural definition: Whether it’s the finest silk, heavy Georgian wool oversized sweaters, textured linen, or matte leather—the right interplay of light and shadow highlights the material’s density and quality.

— Accurate color reproduction: When working with Godox studio flashes and calibrated equipment, the color of the product in the photograph matches reality 100%. This is critically important for minimizing returns in online stores due to the complaint “the color looked different in person.”

On-set tethering: Whenever I work at a photo studio in Tbilisi, my Canon camera is connected directly to a laptop. The designer and stylist can immediately view every shot on a large screen. We instantly spot any wrinkles in the fabric, a misaligned seam, or an incorrect fold, and correct them right on the model.

Adaptation to platform standards: Frames are initially cropped to fit the formats of modern websites and social media. I shoot with strict aspect ratios in mind: 4:5 for posts and 9:16 for vertical Reels/TikTok formats, leaving the right amount of “white space” for website layout or text overlay.

Hybrid Format: Photo + Video: Alongside static lookbooks, we film dynamic model walkthroughs with a professional camera. Video footage of clothing in motion significantly increases purchase conversion rates, as the buyer sees the fabric’s actual drape.
